Reading a UK Gambling Commission Public Register Entry

The Gambling Commission’s public register is a source for checking what the Commission currently records about a gambling business. This page explains the limits of reading a register entry. It is not a guide to choosing a gambling business.

Start with the current public register

The Register of gambling businesses can be searched by business name, trading name, domain name or account number. For editorial or compliance work, record the exact search term, the date and time checked, the result URL, and the register’s displayed update date. Do not turn a search result into a recommendation.

Read the fields as records, not endorsements

The Commission describes an account name as the legal name of the gambling business. Its register can display licence status, permitted activity, regulatory actions, trading names and domain names. These fields describe the current register record. They do not establish a business’s safety, suitability, consumer protection, ownership, availability or status under a different scheme.

Trading names and domain names have stated limits

The Commission says that domain names and trading names are provided by gambling businesses and that it cannot guarantee information provided by third parties. Use a dated formulation such as “the register displayed this field on [date]” when documenting a record. A missing, partial or conflicting result is unresolved information; it is not a conclusion about a business.

Licensing questions should remain separate

A record maintained by another regulator does not establish that a business holds a Gambling Commission operating licence. The Gambling Commission publishes information about how it tackles illegal gambling and maintains its own public register. Neither point should be used here to make a legal, safety or access claim about any business.

GAMSTOP and support

GAMSTOP says its online service blocks people from signing up for or using online accounts with gambling companies licensed in Great Britain. If you are looking for help to stop gambling, use GAMSTOP’s support information or contact GamCare.
